Description
Set within the splendid grounds of The Red House in Aldeburgh — the former home of Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears — is Cosy Nook, a single-storey home. This residence was originally constructed in 1972 for Miss Hudson, who served as the housekeeper for the couple, upon her retirement. The house was designed by the renowned architect Peter Collymore, known for his work on notable projects including Mary Potter's Red Studio and Britten and Pears’ library. Over the years, the interior of the bungalow has been updated and more recently furnished to pay homage to its original era.
The property exudes a secluded ambience, and is accessed through the Red House garden. Inside, there is a modest hall that opens up to an airy, open-plan living space and kitchen with abundant natural light. The living area is furnished with comfortable seating arranged around a curved fireplace. Adjacent to the living area is a compact, but fully equipped kitchen with a dining table and seating for four. French doors on either side provide access to an enclosed garden surrounding the bungalow. Flanking the hallway are two large pivot doors that lead to the two double bedrooms. One bedroom features a king-sized bed, chest of drawers, and built-in wardrobe, while the second bedroom offers twin beds that can be converted into a super king upon request. Both bedrooms have large windows overlooking the lush surroundings. The accommodation is completed by a well-appointed bathroom with a shower, toilet, and hand basin. This delightful property is perfect for couples or small families looking for a tranquil retreat in the picturesque setting of The Red House garden.

The architect
Peter Collymore graduated from the Architectural Association in 1955 alongside notable peers such as Patrick Hodgkinson and Ken Frampton, Collymore embarked on a journey influenced by modernism, including a stint with Skidmore, Owings and Merrill in the United States before joining Robert Matthew Johnson-Marshall and Partners in London. In 1962, Collymore formed an association with fellow architects John Winter, Michael Brawne, and Charlotte Baden-Powell, aiming to collaborate on larger projects. Although this initiative did not yield the intended results, it fostered a lasting camaraderie and provided a foundation for shared endeavors. Collymore's architectural portfolio was diverse, but he was particularly renowned for his expertise in private residences — including his own in Highbury, London. Notable among his projects was the redesign of the Red House in Aldeburgh for Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears, where he created a new library and rehearsal room that perfectly suited the composers' needs, as well as the single storey home for their housekeeper. His architectural prowess extended to writing, including guest editing for The Architectural Review and publishing a monograph on Ralph Erskine's work in 1982.
