History
The Unité d'Habitation in Firminy-Vert is one of five housing complexes designed by Le Corbusier as ‘vertical cities’ which combined residential apartments with communal facilities. The building in Fiminy is the largest and houses around 900 people, measuring 130 m long, 21 m wide, and 56 m high. Construction began in 1965 but was completed André Wogenscky, one of Le Corbusier's colleagues after his accidental death. All interior measurements are based on Le Corbusier’s modulor system. The top three floors of the building were originally occupied by a colourful and bright kindergarten open to the residents’ children for 30 years before it closed in 1998. The rooftop of the building served as a playground for the school and also as an open-air theatre for the building’s residents. Guided tours and access to the a show-flat—which contains original Pierre Guariche design furniture—are available with prior booking.
Area
Firminy’s history dates back to ancient times when it was primarily a rural settlement. However, it wasn't until the 19th century that Firminy began to experience significant development, largely due to the industrial revolution. The town saw the establishment of coal mines and various industrial enterprises, which brought prosperity to the region. One of the most notable figures associated with Firminy is the renowned Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier. He left an indelible mark on the town with his visionary urban planning and architectural designs. Le Corbusier's iconic structures, including the Saint-Pierre Church and the Maison de la Culture, have become emblematic of Firminy's identity and attract architecture enthusiasts from around the world.
Firminy’s strategic location allows for easy access to other notable destinations in the region.
